The Heart to Serve

Scripture:
Matthew 20:25-28
25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. 26 It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, 27 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

John 13:12-14
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet…”

Hebrews 6:10
For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.

Philippians 2:1-11
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Proverbs 11:25
Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.

Mark 10:44-45
“…And whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Matthew 23:11
The greatest among you shall be your servant.

Matthew 25:35-40
35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

Devotional:
I have very much enjoyed digging into the Word about patience with all of you. God is faithful to do a deep work when we soak in His Word and His Presence. I can see His hand and have a sense of peace that I didn’t when I started.

One of the things that surfaced was that I need to focus more on serving my family. Searching the Scripture on servanthood over the past three days has been a lovely time of remembering my “why”. Why am I a mom? There are times when I have to get really honest and as I mentioned last week, I am looking for a return before I am seeking to serve. God isn’t going to zap us when we have that feeling, and the reciprocal relationship is one reason He created us. The question isn’t can or should I have a reciprocal relationship with my children, but is that what motivates or prevents me from serving well?

Jesus is the ultimate Servant. I am so grateful for His ultimate service in his life, death, and resurrection. I pray today that God will equip me and you to serve our families from a heart like His.

Prayer:
Father, I pray today that You will give me joy in serving my family. Show me areas that I need to lay down any selfish motives and replace it with the heart to serve. I thank You for my family and the blessing that they are.

Intercession:
Take the time to focus on the needs of your family. I use a journal for each of my children and make note of new needs and praise reports.

God, I thank You for this day and I commit it to You. In Jesus’ Name I pray, amen.
