Heart Makeover

Scripture:
Mark 7:14-23
14 When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand: 15 There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man. 16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”
17 When He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable. 18 So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?” 20 And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”

Romans 14:17
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 4:23
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Luke 6:45
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

Proverbs 23:19
Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your heart in the way.

Proverbs 3:21-22
My son, do not lose sight of these— keep sound wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck.

Devotional:
Healing is a theme that God has been gently pulling me into for years. As a freshly returning prodigal, I desperately desired to dedicate my life to serving God and to give Him my life and my all.  I attended full time, intensive hands-on Bible school for one year, including seminary grade Bible training classes and full time ministry at a 3000 member church, as well as a ministry tour and trip to Israel to see the footsteps of our Lord. On one leg of our tour, we took part in a church planting service. We helped with the service, and beforehand one of the pastors prayed over us.

As he prayed over me, the Holy Spirit led him to speak over me that God would use me to touch the broken hearted and broken in body. This was humbling to me. I had deep wounds myself, and struggled for years to walk out my own healing. God has been faithful, but as I have walked this out, sadly what was in my heart would burst out and affect others. I burned some very important bridges, and I have had to make amends with others that never produced restoration. Through all of this, He has shown me that the most important thing that I can do is to allow Him to heal the wounds, broken places, and hard spots in this heart. To become tender, to remain tender, and to keep my heart safe. To allow Him to come in to every place in me that hurts, so that I can be a blessing and not a hindrance to others.

The passages above began with Jesus teaching His disciples about how His message was to turn the church culture upside down. No behavior modification or set of proper manners is a substitute for having a pure heart. As we walk out our roles as parents, and as we train our children, God would have us also focus on the heart over the behavior. Is my child full of sass and venom? I need to ask God to show me the cause below it, which in our children’s case is selfishness and self-centeredness.  He would have us pray over this challenge, and sow seeds of empathy, compassion, and servanthood. Am I short-tempered, impatient, and frustrated when things go wrong? God would have me look at what is below that, and in my case it is perfectionism and control stemming from shame from my childhood being chaotic, a lack of spending time in the Word and in worship, and also selfishness and pride. He desires that I also make time and plant seeds through saturating myself in the Truth that needs to go in and take root, and choke out these heart problems. He wants me to allow Him to minister life to me as I let my heart open before Him. Sharing these deep roots with others is another way He leads us into healing. There is also healing in tears, and we need to allow the toxic chemicals in our bodies to be released in a safe place as we weep and allow God to minister to us.

Let us choose to keep our hearts and the hearts of our families as our focus. Behaviors come and go, but the heart is where they begin. God desires to heal each one of us. Remember, He is for you! It is never too late to have a heart makeover!

Prayer:
Lord, today I give my heart to You. I desire to be whole and healed in every corner. If I have held anything back from You, please give me the courage to open my wounded places to Your healing touch. I allow You to lead me gently into places that are hard for me to look at.

Intercession:
(If you haven’t begun a small journal, on your phone, computer or in a small book or section of your journal start to list the requests for your children. If they are the same every day, that is OK. Spend time praying over each area of need. Give them to the Lord. Allow Him to minister to you through His Word and songs that speak to those areas. He is listening!)

Father, I give my family and our hearts to You. Heal us and cause us to have whole and beautiful hearts. In the name of Jesus I pray, amen!
